    The Economic Consequences of Financial Misreporting: Evidence from Employee Responses

    This study investigates the economic consequences of financial misreporting arising from employee responses. Specifically, we examine two employee reactions: (1) withdrawing their human capital and (2) reducing holding of employer stock, in both misreporting period and post-restatement period. We find an increase in employee turnover and a decrease in employee holding of employer stock in the post-restatement period (restatement effect) and some evidence that employees start to react in the period of misreporting (misreporting effect). We also find some evidence that the misreporting effect varies with employee tenure in the misreporting period and the restatement effect varies with the severity of misreporting in the post-restatement period. We further show that our results are not driven by labor demand, increased likelihood of executive turnover, declining stock prices, and internal control weakness disclosures, and are robust to a matched sample estimation. Overall, our study provides evidence of human capital costs of financial misreporting to misreporting firms, shedding new light on the negative consequences of accounting failures

    Experimental Studies and Dynamics Modeling Analysis of the Swimming and Diving of Whirligig Beetles (Coleoptera: Gyrinidae)

    Whirligig beetles (Coleoptera, Gyrinidae) can fly through the air, swiftly swim on the surface of water, and quickly dive across the air-water interface. The propulsive efficiency of the species is believed to be one of the highest measured for a thrust generating apparatus within the animal kingdom. The goals of this research were to understand the distinctive biological mechanisms that allow the beetles to swim and dive, while searching for potential bio-inspired robotics applications. Through static and dynamic measurements obtained using a combination of microscopy and high-speed imaging, parameters associated with the morphology and beating kinematics of the whirligig beetle\u27s legs in swimming and diving were obtained. Using data obtained from these experiments, dynamics models of both swimming and diving were developed. Through analysis of simulations conducted using these models it was possible to determine several key principles associated with the swimming and diving processes. First, we determined that curved swimming trajectories were more energy efficient than linear trajectories, which explains why they are more often observed in nature. Second, we concluded that the hind legs were able to propel the beetle farther than the middle legs, and also that the hind legs were able to generate a larger angular velocity than the middle legs. However, analysis of circular swimming trajectories showed that the middle legs were important in maintaining stable trajectories, and thus were necessary for steering. Finally, we discovered that in order for the beetle to transition from swimming to diving, the legs must change the plane in which they beat, which provides the force required to alter the tilt angle of the body necessary to break the surface tension of water. We have further examined how the principles learned from this study may be applied to the design of bio-inspired swimming/diving robots. DOI: 10.1371/journal.pcbi.100279

    Link-level simulator for 5G localization

    Channel-state-information-based localization in 5G networks has been a promising way to obtain highly accurate positions compared to previous communication networks. However, there is no unified and effective platform to support the research on 5G localization algorithms. This paper releases a link-level simulator for 5G localization, which can depict realistic physical behaviors of the 5G positioning signal transmission. Specifically, we first develop a simulation architecture considering more elaborate parameter configuration and physical-layer processing. The architecture supports the link modeling at sub-6GHz and millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequency bands. Subsequently, the critical physical-layer components that determine the localization performance are designed and integrated. In particular, a lightweight new-radio channel model and hardware impairment functions that significantly limit the parameter estimation accuracy are developed. Finally, we present three application cases to evaluate the simulator, i.e. two-dimensional mobile terminal localization, mmWave beam sweeping, and beamforming-based angle estimation. The numerical results in the application cases present the performance diversity of localization algorithms in various impairment conditions

    Effect of arsenic stress on the intestinal structural integrity and intestinal flora abundance of Cyprinus carpio

    Aquatic organisms such as fish can accumulate high concentrations of arsenic (As), which has toxic effects on fish. However, whether the intestinal flora are involved in As damage to fish intestinal tissues and the underlying process are unclear. Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) were exposed to As (2.83 mg/L) in water for 30 days, and blood, muscle, intestine, and intestine samples were collected. Intestinal pathological sections were observed, and the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels in serum and the levels of As accumulation and tight junction-related factors in intestinal tissues were measured. The gut microbiota was analysed by 16S rRNA sequencing. The results showed that As treatment decreased the abundance of microbiota, increased the number of harmful bacteria, and decreased the number of beneficial bacteria in the intestine. In our experiment, the top 30 harmful and beneficial bacteria with the highest relative abundance were identified. Among the top 30 harmful and beneficial bacteria, As treatment resulted in a significant (P < 0.05) increase in harmful bacteria (such as Fusobacteriota, Bacteroidota (LPS-producing bacteria), Verrucomicrobiota, Bacteroides, Aeromonas, and Stenotrophomonas) and a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in beneficial bacteria (such as Actinobacteriota, Planctomycetota, Firmicutes, Reyranella, Akkermansia, and Pseudorhodobacter), which further demonstrated that As affects the abundance of intestinal flora. In addition, As exposure increased the LPS level in serum and the abundance of Bacteroidota (LPS-producing bacteria) in the intestine. Bacteroidota exhibits the six highest relative abundance at the phylum level, which indicates that LPS produced by Bacteroidota can increase the LPS level in serum. Additionally, the protein and gene levels of the tight junction markers ZO-1 and occludin in the intestine were reduced by As treatment, which further indicated that As exposure impaired the structural integrity of the intestine. In conclusion, the results obtained in our study indicate that the intestinal flora, LPS, and tight junctions participate in the impairment of the structural integrity of the common carp intestine resulting from As exposure

    A genome-wide association study explores the genetic determinism of host resistance to Salmonella pullorum infection in chickens

    International audienceAbstractBackgroundSalmonella infection is a serious concern in poultry farming because of its impact on both economic loss and human health. Chicks aged 20 days or less are extremely vulnerable to Salmonella pullorum (SP), which causes high mortality. Furthermore, an outbreak of SP infection can result in a considerable number of carriers that become potential transmitters, thus, threatening fellow chickens and offspring. In this study, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to detect potential genomic loci and candidate genes associated with two disease-related traits: death and carrier state.MethodsIn total, 818 birds were phenotyped for death and carrier state traits through a SP challenge experiment, and genotyped by using a 600 K high-density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array. A GWAS using a single-marker linear mixed model was performed with the GEMMA software. RNA-sequencing on spleen samples was carried out for further identification of candidate genes.ResultsWe detected a region that was located between 33.48 and 34.03 Mb on chicken chromosome 4 and was significantly associated with death, with the most significant SNP (rs314483802) accounting for 11.73% of the phenotypic variation. Two candidate genes, FBXW7 and LRBA, were identified as the most promising genes involved in resistance to SP. The expression levels of FBXW7 and LRBA were significantly downregulated after SP infection, which suggests that they may have a role in controlling SP infections. Two other significant loci and related genes (TRAF3 and gga-mir-489) were associated with carrier state, which indicates a different polygenic determinism compared with that of death. In addition, genomic inbreeding coefficients showed no correlation with resistance to SP within each breed in our study.ConclusionsThe results of this GWAS with a carefully organized Salmonella challenge experiment represent an important milestone in understanding the genetics of infectious disease resistance, offer a theoretical basis for breeding SP-resistant chicken lines using marker-assisted selection, and provide new information for salmonellosis research in humans and other animals

    Association of CNVs with methylation variation.

    Germline copy number variants (CNVs) and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) form the basis of inter-individual genetic variation. Although the phenotypic effects of SNPs have been extensively investigated, the effects of CNVs is relatively less understood. To better characterize mechanisms by which CNVs affect cellular phenotype, we tested their association with variable CpG methylation in a genome-wide manner. Using paired CNV and methylation data from the 1000 genomes and HapMap projects, we identified genome-wide associations by methylation quantitative trait locus (mQTL) analysis. We found individual CNVs being associated with methylation of multiple CpGs and vice versa. CNV-associated methylation changes were correlated with gene expression. CNV-mQTLs were enriched for regulatory regions, transcription factor-binding sites (TFBSs), and were involved in long-range physical interactions with associated CpGs. Some CNV-mQTLs were associated with methylation of imprinted genes. Several CNV-mQTLs and/or associated genes were among those previously reported by genome-wide association studies (GWASs). We demonstrate that germline CNVs in the genome are associated with CpG methylation. Our findings suggest that structural variation together with methylation may affect cellular phenotype

    Distinct hyperuricemia trajectories are associated with different risks of incident diabetes: A prospective cohort study

    Background and aim: Conflicting results suggest a link between serum uric acid and diabetes and previous studies ignored the effect of continuous exposure of serum uric acid on diabetes risk. This study aims to characterize hyperuricemia trajectories in middle-aged adults and to examine its potential impact on diabetes risk, considering the role of obesity, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. Methods and results: The cohort included 9192 participants who were free of diabetes before 2013. The hyperuricemia trajectories during 2009–2013 were identified by latent class growth models. Incident diabetes during 2014–2018 was used as the outcome. Modified Poisson regression models were used to assess the association of trajectories with diabetes. Furthermore, marginal structural models were used to estimate the mediating effects of the relationship between hyperuricemia trajectories and diabetes. We identified three discrete hyperuricemia trajectories: high-increasing (n = 5794), moderate-stable (n = 2049), and low-stable (n = 1349). During 5 years of follow-up, we documented 379 incident diabetes cases. Compared with the low-stable pattern, the high-increasing pattern had a higher risk of developing diabetes (RR, 1.42; 95% CI: 1.09–1.84). In addition, the percentages of total effect between the high-increasing hyperuricemia pattern and diabetes mediated by obesity, dyslipidemia, and hypertension were 24.41%, 18.26%, and 6.29%. However, the moderate-stable pattern was not associated with an increased risk of diabetes. Conclusions: These results indicate that the high-increasing hyperuricemia trajectory is significantly associated with an increased risk of diabetes. Furthermore, obesity, dyslipidemia, and hypertension play mediating roles in the relationship between the high-increasing hyperuricemia pattern and increased diabetes risk

    The association between Yang-Deficient Constitution and clinical outcome of highly active antiretroviral therapy on people living with HIV

    Objective. To determine the association between Yang-Deficient Constitution and the clinical outcomes of HIV/AIDS patients who have initiated highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Method. A total of 197 antiretroviral-naive adults who initiated HAART between 2009 and 2011 were recruited. The participants were asked to complete a questionnaire twice to assess their Yang-Deficient Constitution status before HAART. During the study, signs and symptoms and CD4 or CD8 T cell counts were recorded. Routine blood and biochemical tests were conducted. For the patients who were found to have infections, pathologic examination was performed. Statistical test of association of clinical attributes and demographic factors with Yang-Deficient Constitution was conducted. Result. Good test-retest reliability was observed for Yang-Deficient Constitution scoring. The median Yang-Deficient Constitution score of 142 eligible participants was 25. Female (score = 32.14, P < 0.05), hepatotoxicity (32.14, P < 0.1), nephrotoxicity (37.50, P < 0.1), total number of adverse events (P < 0.1), and mortality (39.29, P < 0.05) were associated with Yang-Deficient Consitution, while annual changes or nadir values of CD4 or CD8 T lymphocytes, and newly acquired infections after starting HAART were not. Mortality was also associated with total number of adverse events (P < 0.05), hepatotoxicity (P < 0.05), and nephrotoxicity (P < 0.05). Conclusion. Yang-Deficient Constitution score has a potential to be developed as a predictor for early HIV-related mortality and side effects. The interrelation and underlying mechanisms should be further investigated for evidence-based design of a more appropriate treatment strategy. © 2013 Yuwen Cen et al.Link_to_subscribed_fulltex

    Diabetic retinopathy risk in patients with unhealthy lifestyle: A Mendelian randomization study

    PurposeThis study aimed to investigate the causal association between unhealthy lifestyle factors and diabetic retinopathy (DR) risk and to determine better interventions targeting these modifiable unhealthy factors.DesignTwo-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was performed in this study. The inverse variance-weighted method was used as the primary method.MethodOur study included 687 single-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with unhealthy lifestyle factors as instrumental variables. Aggregated data on individual-level genetic information were obtained from the corresponding studies and consortia. A total of 292,622,3 cases and 739,241,18 variants from four large consortia (MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit [MRC-IEU], Genetic Investigation of Anthropometric Traits [GIANT], GWAS &amp; Sequencing Consortium of Alcohol and Nicotine Use [GSCAN], and Neale Lab) were included.ResultIn the MR analysis, a higher body mass index (BMI) (odds ratio [OR], 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.42, 1.30–1.54; P &lt; 0.001] and cigarettes per day (OR, 95% CI = 1.16, 1.05–1.28; P = 0.003) were genetically predicted to be causally associated with an increased risk of DR, while patients with higher hip circumference (HC) had a lower risk of DR (OR, 95% CI = 0.85, 0.76–0.95; P = 0.004). In the analysis of subtypes of DR, the results of BMI and HC were similar to those of DR, whereas cigarettes per day were only related to proliferative DR (PDR) (OR, 95% CI = 1.18, 1.04–1.33; P = 0.009). In the MR-PRESSO analysis, a higher waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) was a risk factor for DR and PDR (OR, 95% CI = 1.24, 1.02–1.50, P = 0.041; OR, 95% CI = 1.32, 1.01–1.73, P = 0.049) after removing the outliers. Furthermore, no pleiotropy was observed in these exposures.ConclusionOur findings suggest that higher BMI, WHR, and smoking are likely to be causal factors in the development of DR, whereas genetically higher HC is associated with a lower risk of DR, providing insights into a better understanding of the etiology and prevention of DR

    Highly time-resolved chemical characterization and implications of regional transport for submicron aerosols in the North China Plain

    To investigate the regional transport and formation mechanisms of submicron aerosols in the North China Plan (NCP), for the first time, we conducted simultaneous combined observations of the non-refractory submicron aerosols (NR-PM1) chemical compositions using aerosol mass spectrometer at urban Beijing (BJ) and at regional background area of the NCP (XL), from November 2018 to January 2019. During the observation period, average mass concentrations of PM1 in BJ and XL were 26.6 +/- 31.7 and 16.0 +/- 18.7 mu g m(-3) respectively. The aerosol composition in XL showed a lower contribution of organic aerosol (33% vs. 43%) and higher fractions of nitrate (35% vs. 30%), ammonium (16% vs. 13%), and chlorine (2% vs. 1%) than in BJ. Additionally, a higher contribution of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) was also observed in XL, suggesting low primary emissions and highly oxidized OA in the background area. Nitrate displayed a significantly enhanced contribution with the aggravation of aerosol pollution in both BJ and XL, which was completely neutralized by excess ammonium at both sites, that the abundant ammonia emissions in the NCP favor nitrate formation on a regional scale. In addition, a higher proportion of nitrate in XL can be attributed to the more neutral and higher oxidation capacity of the background atmosphere. Heterogeneous aqueous reaction plays an important role in sulfate and SOA formation, and is more efficient in BJ which can be attributed to the higher aerosol surface areas at urban site. Regional transport from the southwestern regions of NCP showed a significant impact on the formation of haze episodes. Beside the invasion of transported pollutants, the abundant water vapor associated with the air mass to the downwind background area further enhanced local secondary transformation and expanded the regional scope of the haze pollution in the NCP.
